High Concept Statement

Pokemon GO meets Fodor’s Travel Guide. AR Trek is an Augmented Reality tour guide designed for tourists on cruise ship vacations with virtual wayfinding checkpoints.


Status Quo

Currently, most cruise shore excursions require passengers to travel with one large tour group leaving little flexibility to explore sites that are of personal interest. With AR Trek, users will be able to explore & create a personalized travel experience using popular physical destinations as anchors that launch informational augmented reality overlays.



AR application development is still a new field. Currently, there are no dominant players in the travel and tourism sector.  It is anticipated that the main source of competition would come from existing tours that use other forms of media interaction such as audio guides.



With AR Trek, users have the ability to choose their own tour adventure – architectural, food, cultural or general. A virtual AR guide will display a dotted path on the ground leading to different sites. Users have the freedom to stray from the path or stay in places as long they wish.


Revenue Model

The 2018 total worldwide ocean cruise industry is estimated at $45.6 billion with 26.0 million annual passengers carried. This is a 4.6% increase over 2017, and it is predicted that the number of annual cruise travelers will continue to rise. It is also estimated that a vacationer spends $150  per cruise shore excursion. Over the last 15 years, the average age demographic has been trending downwards from age 56 in 2002 to age 46 today. Augmented Reality is an emerging technology that has mass market appeal in this industry due to the ubiquity of mobile phones. Also, as the age demographic continues to decrease, the travel industry can use this innovative technology to create new kinds of travel experiences for different generations.     By using in-app branded graphics at virtual starting points, cruises & local businesses will be able to sponsor checkpoints within the AR display. Content will be maintained & refreshed using a monthly subscription (SAAS) strategy. Also, onboard ship credits for cruise services can be awarded through gamification.
