A searchable makeup dupe database with user reviews so you can look like a million bucks ー but for far less money.


Status Quo

A makeup ‘dupe’ is a cheap product that is similar or identical to an expensive name brand product. Dupes are a popular discussion topic on social media for bloggers, influencers, and makeup users. As the popularity of inexpensive makeup brands has increased, the search for dupes has grown exponentially.



Makeup influencers promote dupes regularly on their social media, especially in makeup tutorials. The current go-to source for dupes is DupeThat, an instagram with 1.2MM followers. DupeThat also has a very bare bones website. Aside from this, there is no overall aggregate platform for dupe comparisons. Most information online is scattered across blogs and social media. Finding a specific dupe is usually done by searching “product name + dupe” in Google and sifting through the results.



Makeup Match is a database of dupes & reviews. A user can search “Chanel Lipstick- Beige” and get a list of comparable products, like ColorPop – Beige (which is $20 cheaper). Dupes have user ratings across two similarity factors: appearance and quality, and top rated dupes are listed first. Users can both rate dupes as well as add their own dupe suggestions.


Revenue Model

The app will be free to use. It will have advertising opportunities for makeup brands in the form of display ads, sponsored product listings, marketing partnerships and links to buy. After building a strong user base, MM can explore opportunities for monetizing user data.
