High Concept Statement
Access Instagram without seeing likes. See content for what it is, not through the filter of numbers. Think for yourself, comment more, connect for real.
Status Quo
Instagram is a valuable sharing tool, but the drawbacks are that it has increasingly become about the numbers. Users experience have experienced effects such as addiction/compulsion or overly relying on validation by numbers for self-worth. Studies have shown that seeing likes have measurable neuropsychological effects.
Competition
Kiyo is a relatively new social media app that also aims to create a platform without likes. However, it establishes its own network as opposed to simply being a method to access existing platforms – that gives it a potential virality aspect, but it is very difficult to succeed in competition with existing social media if not enough users convert, especially if most of the content creators they follow do not convert too.
Solution
Nullify allows Instagram users to retain the same network and the ability to like and comment on other people’s posts – but let users hide the numbers, which cause undesired negative effects. Could be developed for a different social media platform outside of instagram, or access multiple selected platforms as well.
Revenue Model
Impact could be tracked via a survey of users’ mood over time using the app (given reduced time accessing Instagram outside of the app) – if the data of a user shows positive results and those findings are presented to them over time, it could provide incentive for users to keep using the app and to share it with friends.
